A THIRD OF DIABETICS MAY DEVELOP KIDNEY DISORDERS

Around 120 million pople in the world are known to have kidney diseases and the number is set to zoom with the increase in incidence of diabetes, according to R.Padmanabhan, Chief Nephrologist, BGS Global hospital, Bangalore.

He said 30% of the 177 million diabetics in the world are likely to develop kidney disease. The number of diabetics is expected to more than double by 2030.

Those who are at risk are obese and overweight, and have diabetes and high blood pressure.
Managing the disease entails regular check-up for blood sugar level, blood pressure and regular exercise. ( 45 mts to 1 hr brisk walking is essential, followed by exercise)

When the tissues of the body are exposed to high blood sugar for a long period, the blood vessels in the kidney and the membranes supporting the blood vessels get damaged, resulting in protein leakage into the urine, leading to diabteic kidney disorder.
